MAGGIE SHIU : I CAN'T SPEAK WELL
Maggie Shiu has remarkable actingskills. From an innocent girl to a matured doctor, her experiencestretches over 20 years. This time, she portrays the role in "Election"with a rather special flavour. However, Maggie is one whois seldom in the entertainment news. She has been living a simple life.The only ways one can know more about her will be interviews or someold news which she faces very easily. As for this interview whichshe accepts for her new movie, her face is a visible blank, "I can'tspeak well, so please help me fill up the space." Maggie has been an actorwith this director (Johnny To) since '97 to '99. She has even forgotten when shesigned an contract with him but his company is a place where Maggie isfamiliar. All her movie awards are placed here and she is close even tothe auntie serving drinks. However, once she is back on the interview,she seems rather frustrated and worse, when facing the camera, sheadded, "Taking photos is my biggest stress." Back to the movie, Maggiehas been doing well in movies, winning Best Supporting Actress at leasttwice and portraying rather manly roles. The feminity is worsethan when I was acting in "The Threshold of Era" as I don't dress up likethis usually." Pointing to her casual shoewear, she says she likes tobe simple and at ease. Then, as the photographer requests for afull-body photo, she takes off her slippers. Other than the shoewear,Maggie continues to explain, "My character. She's very bold, someonewho speaks very in a firm way, someone who's gone through a lot. She issomeone who trusts and listen to her husband a lot, and tries her bestto help and support him. As long as he likes it, she will be besidehim, not considering herself at all." "It may not be my first timeacting a very tough character, but this role really requires me toconcentrate and forget all about myself. I have to forgo even thelittle things I do, like moving my hands about while talking, or movingbackwards suddenly while talking. These are my "small actions" I have toremove." The reporter has heard that she was even in a fight scene.Maggie explains, "I was beaten, nearly beaten to death that sort, andit's all real, especially since I have an old injury, I sprained myhip." In this show, Tony Leung isher husband. "We do not have many scenes together, but our speeches arevery touching, and will make people feel really comfortable. This ishow a couple's realationship can be so deep." "We specially arrangecertain things for each character, but we don't say them out but justuse our feelings. For example, I will be thinking, this couple met eachother on a roof so I will... Go and watch the movie! It's this kind offeeling that is so hard to express!" Tony and Maggie acted oncepreviously in Black Rose in '92 but has not acted together till now.Under this director, she has paired up with Simon Yam many times. Whenasked to describe both of them, she was in much difficulty to answer,"Simon is good, Tony is also good! (Maggie herself can't resistlaughing) Both are serious, and don't waste any time." As for with the director,Maggie states, "When he has a suitable role, he will find me althoughit's not every movie he make. In a manly show, a female role is alsorequired but he will not just ask me in. I trust him a lot and he knowshow I will act it out differently each time. For this movie, herequested for me not be too complicated and just keep things simple." Since the 80s, Maggie hasbeen on our TV till now. The audience like her just like how she likesall the roles she plays. However, the audience did not accept herplaying the mother of Sonija, Charmaine and Ron in several TVB dramas. "This is something I have toaccept, not that I mind. It is a rather difficult type of role and aslong as I act it well, I don't mind at all. It's a different stage... Iwould prefer shooting about the past (in ancient drama), as the people then had childrenwhen they were less than 20 years old." Maggie is very open about this, "Everything's fine as long as there's acting to be done." Is it because Maggie had tostay home a few years back when she was ill and therefore she isappreciating even these roles? "I'm not saying about that time, but thefact that there are many jobless people out there, so I should just acthappily as the days go by." As for Maggie's recent sexyadvertisements, many people were not used to it. "That is another role,a very fit, perfect lady. (The reporters were all very shocked too!)Well, I'm an actor. I will give my best to what people call for.They don't have to persuade me. They just know I can so they call me. Ithink I can lah, and most importantly is the surprise I give topeople." Maggie pointed out thatafter the ads, she did not mind acting a crazy, joking or squarish sortof role, but nobody asked, so she would just like to be herself.
